The Big Brothers program started in Sault Ste. Marie in 1970. The program's goal was to help boys, ages eight to sixteen, who were missing a male role model in their home. In the fall of 1972 a program called R.A.L.F. (Reach A Little Friend) began in the Sault. This program was the equivalent to Big Brothers in its program philosophy and goals, but was set up for girls. It eventually became known as Big Sisters and united with Big Brothers to what is known now as Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Sault Ste. Marie.
Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Sault Ste. Marie now serves all of Chippewa County and offers programs such as Hockey Heroes, Girls Group, Fishing Buddies and Lunch Buddies
Children between the ages of 6 and 16 who need a little extra support from a positive role model.
National studies of children matched with Big Brothers Big Sisters found that after one year Little Brothers and Little Sisters were:
One-to-one adult mentors for children and in school peer mentoring.
BBBS recruits, screens, trains, and matches volunteer mentors to children referred by elementary school teachers, counselors, human service agencies and parents. We look at the needs, interests and location of the children when matching them to a mentor. We ask that mentors commit to at least one year of their time to their potential "Little".
For in-school peer mentoring the match and meetings takes place in the school. The same factors are used when matching peer mentors as when matching adult mentors
